United Way of Greater New Bedford and United Way of Greater Plymouth County announced today they plan to merge and create a new United Way serving 31 communities in Southeastern Massachusetts. They have signed a Letter of Intent and expect the transaction to close on January 1, 2027.
The two organizations already work together under a shared-services agreement. Since January, the United Way of Greater New Bedford (UWGNB) has provided financial administration and marketing support for the Plymouth United Way (UWGPC).
“This merger makes great sense,” said Michelle N. Hantman, President and CEO of United Way of Greater New Bedford. “We serve contiguous communities with closely aligned missions, and together we’ll be better positioned to respond to what our communities need and pursue new opportunities. I’m excited to build on the work we’ve done in Greater New Bedford while getting to know the Plymouth County community, listening, learning, and working alongside community members and partners.”
Hantman will lead the merged organization, to be temporarily named the United Way of Greater New Bedford and Plymouth County until a new legal name is chosen. Hantman, who recently celebrated her 20th anniversary at the helm of the UWGNB, will retain her title of President and CEO. Dennis Carman, who led the Plymouth County organization for 20 years, retired in June.
"After Dennis retired, we explored different ways to enhance our impact,” said Andrew Lynch, chair of the UWGPC board of directors. “We chose UWGNB because they are a highly effective organization that is best aligned with our goals. We are confident that the people who rely on us in Plymouth County will be well served by this new entity.”
Christopher Fortier, UWGNB board chair, said he also believes that the two organizations will make a good fit.
“We see this as an opportunity to build an even stronger United Way with greater reach, broader influence, and the resources to help more people, in more ways,” Fortier said. “We will work deliberately and thoughtfully as we build this new United Way, using a phased-in approach to join our programs, teams, and committed volunteers.”
UWGNB will remain the legal entity, governed by a 25-member board made up of the directors of both organizations. Existing staff are expected to remain, although roles and responsibilities may change. Community partnerships and programs for both organizations will also continue as the new, merged entity takes shape.
Hantman said, “We have a lot of work ahead as we bring our organizations together,” Hantman said. “But I look forward to what we can accomplish as we serve Greater New Bedford and Plymouth County regions.”
