Planned Giving

A planned gift to United Way of Greater Plymouth County is one of the most meaningful ways to ensure that children, families, and individuals across Greater Plymouth County have the support they need for generations to come. Many options offer meaningful tax advantages, and most can be arranged without affecting your financial security today. We encourage you to speak with your financial or legal advisor to determine the approach that is right for you.

Start with Your Will
The most common way to make a planned gift is through a bequest in your will or living trust. You may designate United Way of Greater Plymouth County as a beneficiary of a specific dollar amount, a named asset, or a percentage of your estate. A bequest costs nothing during your lifetime and can be updated as your circumstances change.

UWGPC has partnered with FreeWill, an online tool that allows you to create a legally valid will at no cost in approximately 20 minutes. You can use FreeWill to include a gift to UWGPC as part of your estate plans.

IRA Charitable Rollover
If you are age 70½ or older, you may make a tax-free gift directly from your individual retirement account to United Way of Greater Plymouth County. Known as a qualified charitable distribution, this type of gift can count toward your required minimum distribution and may reduce your taxable income, even if you do not itemize deductions. Gifts up to the annual IRS limit, which adjusts periodically for inflation, may qualify. Please consult your IRA administrator or financial advisor for details.
Retirement Plan Beneficiary Designation
You can name United Way of Greater Plymouth County as a full or partial beneficiary of your 401(k), 403(b), IRA, or other retirement account. Because retirement assets passed to individuals are often subject to income and estate taxes, naming a charity as a beneficiary can be a particularly tax-efficient way to make a lasting gift. Contact your plan administrator for the beneficiary designation form.
Life Insurance Policy
You may designate United Way of Greater Plymouth County as a beneficiary of an existing life insurance policy, or consider transferring ownership of a paid-up policy to UWGPC as an outright gift. Depending on the structure of your gift, you may be eligible for a charitable deduction. Please consult your insurance advisor or tax advisor for guidance specific to your situation.
