United Way of Greater Plymouth County Announces Upcoming Retirement of President Dennis Carman

Plymouth County, MA — United Way of Greater Plymouth County (UWGPC) is announcing the upcoming retirement of Dennis Carman, President & CEO, following more than 20 years of dedicated service to United Way and a career devoted to strengthening communities across the region.
Mr. Carman marked his 20th anniversary with United Way of Greater Plymouth County in early March, culminating a distinguished career defined by collaboration, compassion, and an unwavering focus on improving the lives of neighbors throughout Plymouth County and the surrounding South Shore communities.

Since joining UWGPC, Dennis has guided the organization by building strong partnerships across the nonprofit, public, and private sectors. Under his leadership, United Way has advanced vital work in housing stability, homelessness prevention, health, and community resilience - always grounded in the belief that meaningful, lasting change happens through relationships.

“For twenty years, I have been honored and blessed to have been the President & CEO of our United Way of Greater Plymouth County,” Said Carmam. “As I prepare to say “farewell” to so many generous and compassion people, I am so thankful for all of these rich relationships and precious partnerships and how we have been able to work together to improve the lives of our neighbors in need. Please continue to unite and carry on this life-changing and life-saving work.”

Prior to joining UWGPC, he served for more than 12 years as Executive Director of MainSpring Coalition for the Homeless, where he deepened his commitment to housing justice and systems-level collaboration. Across every role, Dennis has been known as a connector - bringing people, resources, and opportunities together to address complex community challenges.

A graduate of Notre Dame High School in West Haven, Connecticut, Dennis earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Stonehill College, majoring in Psychology with a minor in English. He went on to receive dual master’s degrees from The Ohio State University - a Master of Social Work and a Master of Arts in Public Administration - laying the foundation for a lifelong career in nonprofit leadership and community impact.
Throughout his career, Dennis has been deeply engaged in civic leadership. He is a former board member of the Massachusetts Housing and Shelter Alliance and the Massachusetts Nonprofit Network. He currently serves as Co-Chair of the South Shore Regional Network to End Homelessness, Co-Chair of the Opportunities to Serve Team with Brockton’s Promise, and facilitator of the Brockton Area Hunter Network, among many other collaborative initiatives.

Dennis’s dedication extends beyond his professional work. He serves on the Board of Deacons and the Prudential Board at Silver Lake Chapel in Plympton, Massachusetts, and regularly volunteers at community dinners for residents of an elderly housing complex -efforts that reflect his belief in service at every level.

His leadership and impact have been recognized with numerous honors, including Stonehill College’s President’s Medal, the Marie Sheehan Heart of the Homeless Award, and the Distinguished Service Award from Bridgewater State University, among others.
“I’ve had the honor of knowing Dennis for over 25 years,” commented Andrew Lynch, Chair of UWGPC Board of Directors. “It is a testament to both his character and leadership that 20 years doesn’t feel like enough time with him at the helm. On behalf of the board of directors, we thank him for all he has given to this organization.”

Please join us on June 4, 2026, to celebrate Dennis at our 104th Annual Meeting at Bridgewater State University, Grand Ballroom.  The event if from 11:30 am – 1:00 pm.

The UWGPC Board of Directors will share additional details regarding leadership transition plans at a later date. Dennis will continue in his role through the end of June, ensuring a smooth and thoughtful transition ahead of his retirement.
